Modification Monday: The Robin Meets Dotted Rays

Original Patterns: Robin and Dotted Rays

Knitter Extraordinaire: Carmen (Ravelry ID)

Mods: Using the Robin Shawl pattern to start, Carmen changed the garter wedges to stockinette,  and added yarn overs where the short row turns occurred, which gives the shawl the ‘Dotted Rays’ influence. Details can be found on her project page, here.

What Makes This Awesome: As someone who is not a big fan of knitting short rows, I LOVE this idea of using the typical ‘wrap and turn’ of short rows into eyelets. The combination of the eyelets with the garter edges outlining the wedges creates a fantastic effect, and the shawl looks amazing for it. I love the combination of the stockinette with the garter outlines as well, it was a nice textural decision rather than switching entirely to stockinette. If you enjoy knitting shawls, think about two different patterns that could be combined like this- or possibly even one pattern that could be changed with the addition or subtraction of yarn overs, garter stitch, or stockinette?

interesting colors choices here – not my first pick. But a great use of patterns – you found another good one to talk about.

Anything by Stephen West is always interesting, so it’s fun to see someone modify it.

I like the mash-up of this one. And short rows + shawls are always interesting to see. Thanks, Julie!
