Modification Monday: Tree of Life Throw Pillow

Original Patterns: Tree and DNA Scarf

Knitter Extraordinaire: Graig (Ravelry ID)

Mods: Using the cabled designs from the tree pattern and the SNA scarf, Graig combined them into a throw pillow. Details can be found on his project page, here.

What Makes This Awesome: Knitted throw pillows are a brilliant way to add more knitting to your decor (other than just leaving WIPs around, like I do…) and a small scale way to experiment with more adventurous techniques, like the amazing cables that comprise the tree cable design. Graig did an amazing job of putting together the two different cable patterns – and a seed stitch back, too!  The seed stitch panels on the front help balance the design and frame the DNA cable, and which helps make the back of the cushion feel like carefully considered part of the design. The result is timeless and so beautiful.

What a beautiful pillow! Or cushion – not sure what the difference is. For me, a cushion is what you put on your sofa, and a pillow what you put on your bed. Is there another difference? Anyway, great mod and beautiful yarn too.

That’s great! I love it when folks take stitch patterns and motifs and use them for different objects. Well done 🙂

I love the combination of the tree of life and the DNA strand. It’s such a lovely combination of something a little spiritual and science with a unifying theme. Love it so much.

Julie, I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all of the time you spend making this blog happen. I love everything, but I especially look forward to Mod Monday’s and Pin Friday’s, because they give me a window into how other knitters are approaching their work, and where they get inspiration. Plus, it’s really fun. I appreciate what you’re doing and I wish you happy holidays!

I have loved both of these patterns on various knitted projects I’ve seen through the years – to make the realization to put them together on one project – totally brilliant. The balance of them, on this square pillow, is just perfect. I love it and may have to steal this combo idea for a future ‘square’ idea (also thinking – one mitten or fingerless glove with DNA strand and other with tree of life would be a pretty cool set!)
Thanks for all the wonderful modifications you have shared this year, and I hope you and your family have a safe, fun, and relaxing holiday season!!

Oh YES!!! I, too, have stared long and hard at both of these patterns wanting to do SOMETHING with them.
This is just perfect. So love this and will have to be a copycat.
Had to laugh…knitted decor=leaving WIPs laying about. We have the same decorator!!
And what is the mitten pic about?

YES! I love having pillows around, even if they end up off the couch when people sit down. How fantastic is this? So great 🙂 thanks for sharing.
