Pin Ups and Link Love: My Favourite Things This Week

My Favourite Articles and Links This Week

This was a fascinating essay on how the internet has given fans the idea that they deserve to shape the art they love.

Productivity isn’t just about what you do- it’s what you don’t do. After reading this, I felt like I just found a missing puzzle piece on a jigsaw I’ve been trying to solve for ages.

Sometimes pausing for 3 seconds before reacting can transform the conversation you are having, and possibly turn your whole day around.

1,300 sheep terrorized (okay, they just sort of wandered about) a small Spanish city after their shepherd fell asleep. Let the counting sheep jokes begin!

I have been forgetting to link to these- I was asked by the amazing Taddle Creek magazine to read a couple poems for their podcast, and it’s always interesting to hear a poem instead of just reading it on the page. Here is a podcast of my poem that imagines a young, pre-Wizard of Oz Dorothy, seeing a tornado for the very first time.  And then here is the podcast of my reading about a tourist’s experience of going to an Irish whiskey distillery.

My Favourite Pins This Week

Pin Ups and Link Love: Spaghetti with basil and tomatoes | knittedbliss.com

A fresh summer pasta? Heck yes- full of roasted cherry tomatoes and fresh basil. The toasted breadcrumbs are worth the effort, too! If you are watching your carbs, you could substitute half the pasts for spiralized zucchini noodles. Pinterest link is here, and the original recipe is here.

Pin Ups and Link Love: Blueberry and Lemon Loaf Cake| knittedbliss.com

Blueberry and Lemon Loaf- I love lemon loaf all year round, but now that blueberry season is almost upon us, and I had a nice batch from the grocery store recently. Blueberries and lemon go together so well, don’t you think? Pinterest link is here, and the original recipe post is here.

Pin Ups and Link Love: DIY Summer Satchel | knittedbliss.com

This cute summer bag is made from two woven placemats, can you believe it? I love how it looks, so great for summer. Pinterest link is here, and the original DIY post is here.

Pin Ups and Link Love: Flower Photography| knittedbliss.com

This is a very clever tutorial on how to take more dramatic photos of flowers using a flashlight… and it has me wondering what else the techniques could be applied to. I wonder how knitting of skeins of yarn would look lit like this? Pinterest link is here, tutorial is here.

Pin Ups and Link Love: Ugly Bridesmaid Dress Paintball| knittedbliss.com

I think this is the most fun idea for a bridal shower, birthday party, or just some random weekend- you and a bunch of friends get some of the ugliest old bridesmaid dresses you can find (hello, thrift store finds!) and then go play paintball in them. I’m totally going to do this one day, this sounds freaking awesome!! Pinterest link is here, and the original post is here.

What sort of plans have you got this weekend? My parents are coming to visit (Lila is so excited), and we are going to be visiting the Toronto islands again this weekend! I’m going to ask for a high chair for James this time, so he can’t get my hamburger. 😉

Wonderful links. The first one is actually pretty scary, but I can see entitlement is destroying many things in many areas: the idea that we deserve anything makes us ungrateful and selfish. I read another interesting piece this week about the Generation Snowflake (google it): this new generation of mostly young women who cannot tolerate any dissenting opinion, and are traumatized by clapping (surreal but sadly true).
Loved the sheep: imagine getting woken up by a flock of sheep crossing your street. I will make some time this week-end to listen to your podcast, you have a lovely soft voice. Enjoy your family week-end, hope the weather is nice.

I love the links you provide – so great to go through them on the weekend! I will definitely listen to podcasts, I really love your voice!! As for a weekend I am hoping to have a short road trip this Sunday and tomorrow is the birthday of my husband. I am taking him out for dinner (better to say dragging him out 🙂 ). He doesn’t really like to celebrate. I hope you will have an amazing time with your family!

THank you for reminding me of the 3 second PAUSE so important.
    I want that blueberry bread

We had a paintball party for my husband’s birthday a few years ago. It was a blast! I wouldn’t recommend doing it too close to a wedding though since some of the paintballs left bruises. Tomorrow is supposed to be really hot so we’re going to go swimming in a spring-fed lake followed by dinner at our fav. restaurant.

Paintball has always sounded fun. Except seeing people’s bruises after they go has always made me not *really* want to go – sometimes, I bruise ridiculously easy, sometimes not, and I don’t want to find out what kind of experience paintball would be in that regard xD
And so far as the fandom bits go, I think I saw that the most with SW Episode 7. I don’t follow too many things closely, but Star Wars, ah. That’s my jam. I kept up with quite a bit of the announcements and whatnot, avoiding spoilers as best I could, and I had an idea in my head of what I wanted it to be. We get fed so much information, it’s easy to think it *should* be a certain way, and we of course get disappointed when it’s not. Without all this information, we wouldn’t have the chance to configure how best it would perfectly go. It’s a double-edged sword, all the information.

I always love what you share! That summer pasta looks delicious, the blueberry lemon loaf as well! I also appreciate the “pausing for 3 seconds idea”. That’s smart! I need to do that more often!

Pasta recipe printed out ready for use. Blueberry lemon loaf bookmarked for when we have an Occasion. Thanks.

As for the ‘pause for 3 seconds’ . . . great idea. Quicker than counting ’til ten too!

Oh I drooled over that blueberry lemon loaf! We have plenty of frozen blueberries. I like that photography tip about using a flashlight and a reflector. These simple tools really bring life to a flower.

    Love the pins…no surprise there.
Have to say my favorite thing ever was hearing your beautiful poems. You are so talented Julie!

It always takes me a while to get through your Friday posts because they’re always packed with so much goodness!

Loved hearing you read your wonderful poems.

And now I want roasted tomato pasta and blueberry lemon loaf for breakfast!

    xo
