Artistic Differences: Review and Giveaway

Talitha Kuomi‘s Artistic Differences is a bit different from a typical pattern collection- it features ten patterns, but each patterns also comes with instructions for making changes to it for a different look. Some of the changes are really big and dramatic, and others are subtle, but with each pattern having variables, it turns each pattern into two.  This is the kind of collection that would be especially great for someone who would like to make modifications to patterns but doesn’t quite feel confident going ‘off the pattern’ just yet– this collection helps bridge that gap by helping you see what sort of changes yield what sort of effects, all while walking you through the pattern step by step.

My favourite example is the gorgeous Forte sweater:

The Boho version on the left features a small dropped stitch detail to form a v-neck appearance, and the Rocker version has a much more dramatic, deeper V neck appearance.  See what I mean about same pattern, but a very different look? I also love the Trume socks, which have a seriously cool slouchy version, or a more classic fit. There’s even two different stitch options.

And the Osci, which has a super sweet boho beanie and a slouchy, cooler-weather Rocker version:

I like the variations, it’s a nice way to cover some different styles within the same pattern, and the items would most definitely work in a non-musical context, too- like when you go for brunch or pop out for groceries.

Would you like to win a copy of this pattern collection, and start making some mods of your own? Then check out all ten patterns on Ravelry here (it’s worth it to click through the photos for all the variations), and leave a comment here letting me know which pattern you find the most inspiring. Winner will be announced Friday, Feb 20th!
