Modification Monday: Lacy Boxy

Original Pattern: Cancun Boxy Lacy Top and Boxy

Knitter Extraordinaire: Keiko (Ravelry ID, blog)

Mods: Using the Boxy pattern as a shape guide, Keiko integrated the stitch patterns from Cancun Boxy instead. Details can be found on her project page, here.

What Makes This Awesome: Pattern mash ups, my favourite! I love how Keiko used the shape of a patterns he loved – the Boxy top- and then used the airy textured stitch design from Cancun Boxy Lace Top for an airy, summery sweater that layers over everything. She also used a summery yarn with a lot of drape (a linen and flax blend) which is definitely more summer-friendly than a wool blend. Although I suppose that depends on what summer is like where you are!

Are there any fall or winter patterns that you would consider doing a revamp for summer? Would you change out the stitch for something airy like this, just change the yarn to something like cotton, linen, or flax?

My only pet peeve with lacy garments for summer is that I don’t understand the logic. It’s hot, right ? So why should I wear a garment that requires an under garment ? I don’t get this. A lacy cardigan, anytime. A lacy tank or sweater – not so sure.
That being said, her sweater is totally gorgeous.

I’m confused-aren’t linen and flax the same thing? Linen is made from flax, right? Is there a less processed linen that qualifies as flax? Or were you thinking of hemp maybe?
I love lacy summery tops. So far, I’ve just knit patterns intended for summery yarns rather than modifying. The one Keiko knit looks so cool and breezy.

      Hi Meredith,

Yes, linen is made from flax! My understanding is that some people use the term flax and some use linen- presumably where linen means the woven fabric items (table linen, bed linen) and not the plant fiber. I was trying to be inclusive but I think it came across as confusing. Sorry!

Oh my! How clever. It’s funny because some of the ladies in my group were making the Boxy and I was getting confused if it was the “Cancun Boxy” or not, because maybe they were abbreviating. Then I found out they were different patterns all together. haha. Love seeing this mash up!

haha, I had to double check the names too- I was getting confused just with the links! Having boxy in both pattern names makes for an easy mix up. 🙂

Lovely jumper, though I don’t think I’ll be making it any time soon. A lacy cardigan now . . .

Looking on the Bright Side of life is always a good thing. As is cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude. Pollyanna wasn’t a silly young girl, she got it right!

Why not be happy for other people when they succeed? Someone else’s success doesn’t mean there’s less success ‘available’ for me. So be happy for them. In fact just try to be happy!

And one more thing, kinda related – allowing other people who have a heck of a lot less than I do to have a little more could substantially improve their lives, _without_ diminishing the quality of mine.

Sharon you are spot on with all your observations! Totally agree with your points, no one wins when we feel like success, rights, or advantages are a finite resource – there isn’t any less because we help others access them. 🙂

I’ve had this same “melted mod” in mind for a while…just waiting for the summer the boxy top would be more trendy oversized than form-fitting.lol.
The nice thing about sections of lace is they can be moved about for modesty and still provide ventilation and a bit of pretty. Classic pattern.
