Modification Monday: Villikset

Original Pattern: Trendikkäät neuleleggingsit

Knitter Extraordinaire: Johanna (Ravelry ID)

Mods: Using the legging pattern as a starting point, Johanna incorporated a stranded fair isle design she found in a Finnish knitting magazine.  Details on her project page can be found here.

What Makes This Awesome: I’m always completely dazzled by knitted leggings! It feels like a very impressive undertaking, and yet I love how they look- these fantastic leggings are no exception. I love that she took a simple solid colour pattern and fancied them up with the stranded colourwork. It’s worth noting that she has some solid space in her stranded repeats, to help provide an easier place to work in shaping in the trickier spots, since otherwise working decreases or increases in stranded design can get a bit awkward. Building in some solid section helps with this tremendously- see how they fall at the knee, upper thigh, and across the top of the thigh and gusset area? That’s some good planning right there!

Leggings always seem like such a huge project, but if you think about it, they can’t be any more knitting that a sweater, right? I have some very cozy and colourful ones I bought last year, but when they wear out someday, I think I’ll try knitting some myself!

This is really impressive, especially when you reach the butt area. I mean, short rows, increases/decreases, or do you just rely on the wool to adjust to your cheeks? And with Fair Isle on top of it. Truly awesome.
