Polar Bear Ornament

I lost track of the days of the week, because it’s that strange time between Christmas and New Years and honestly I’m just eating chocolate most of the time. But I’ve got a slightly modified adorable polar bear! That counts as a Mod Monday, right?

Knitted ornaments are a perfect scrapbusting project, and the small size means that even with the finishing, you can make this in a weekend, easily. Plus if you love knitting stuffed toys like I do, this is basically the same thing- but you finish it much faster!

Pattern: Winter Animals Knit Christmas Ornaments

Yarn: Kristen Omdahl Be So Brave Worsted in Picket Fence, Scarf is in Lichen and Lace in Wildflowers

Needles: 3.25 mm (US 3)

Mods: I embroidered the claw details onto the paws, and I sewed the arms down into place.

The pattern is easy to follow and very straightforward. I like that it’s got the instructions for 5 different types of animals – bear, mouse, bunny, fox, and reindeer. Very good value for money on a pattern purchase, if you ask me!

It look me about one day to knit this, from cast on to completely stuffed and embroidered. I added a few extra details to mine- I embroidered the claw details onto the paws, and I sewed the arms down into place. My arms were a bit longer than the pattern called for, and on their own I thought they looked a bit like flippers. Sewing them into place worked out really well for me.  Once I did it, I thought it would have been cute to knit something for him to hold – I have no idea what, but something!

A note about the embroidery details- I did all my face and claw details with cotton embroidery floss, and I used normal sewing thread to sew the arms into place. It’s hard to see unless you are looking VERY closely.

The cuteness is all in the details for these little ornaments, and if you like doing details on your knits then these are going to bring you so much pleasure.  I can imagine how fun it would be to experiment with different knit stitches for the scarf, or embroider different colour details on them. A pink reindeer would be super cute, I think. Or a scarf with some holly embroidered on it! Maybe a hat on the bear!

TIP: When it’s time to tuck away your sweet knitted ornament for the season, store it in an airtight bag, like a ziploc. This will ensure that no matter where you store your holiday decor, your little knitted ornament will remain mold-free and moth-free!
