Modification Monday: Flamingo Socks

Original Pattern: Flamingo Mittens

Knitter Extraordinaire: Cindy (Ravelry ID, blog)

Mods: Using the chart from the mitten pattern, Cindy made ankle socks instead. Details can be found on her project page, here.

What Makes This Awesome: Patterns for stranded designs like socks and mittens are often knit in fingering weight and with very similar needle sizes, so they are an ideal place to experiment if you are looking to take a chart that you love and incorporate it into one for the other. It’s especially helpful if you find a pattern – in this case, for socks- that has a stitch count that works with the pattern repeat, which can make your life significantly easier when trying to make adjustments from mitten to sock. A chart that has additional elements, like the little hint of flowers between the flamingos at the top and bottom, also is helpful if you want to take that smaller element and use it near a cuff or other detail.

I love how these stranded socks seem especially summery not just because of the super cute flamingos, but because of their ankle length- who says stranded socks are just for cold weather, right?

Very cute indeed. Wouldn’t stranded socks be warmer though, with the double layer of yarn? Unless you use cotton. In any case, a good reminder that you can use charts on any pattern if you choose to.
