Original Patterns: Sparkle Up and Rectangular Chevron Shawl

Knitter Extraordinaire: Katharina (Ravelry Profile)

Mods: Katharina combined the Sparkle Up sweater with some eyelet chevron inspiration from a shawl, and then further customized the chevrons with double yarn overs, and eyelet stripes in between. You can read more great details on her project page, here.

What Makes This Awesome: Katharina’s notes on this are very detailed and interesting, especially when she was working on the swatch for her idea. You’ll see that she experimented with single yarn overs and double yarn overs, and went with the double yarn overs to give the chevrons a bolder look.

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA. If you are modifying something to incorporate design elements from another pattern, swatch a couple of times. Experiment with what it would look like with double yarn overs instead of single yarn overs, or if you added twisted stitches instead of just purl stitches, etc. Swatches are a great place to play with your creativity! If it doesn’t work, it was just a small swatch so it’s not a big deal.  The overall effect of the modified stitches gives this sweater such a gorgeous look, an it would be perfect for warmer weather or climates that don’t get too cold in the winter. It’s beautiful!

Which came first? The yarn or the perfect match camisole?
Looking at the ten inches of snow outside with the additional four inches falling now and trying to remember what warm weather feels like for such a great sweater.
