A New Modification Monday: Adapted Kaffe Fassett Circles

Anet so kindly sent in this amazing mod, and I had to showcase it!

Original Pattern: Floating Circles Sweater

Knitter Extraordinaire: Anet (Ravelry)

Mods: Anet took the circle pattern from the original sweater, used jus the centers of those circles, and incorporated it into a pretty detail at the hem, cuffs, and neckline. Details can be found on her Ravelry project page, here.

What Makes This Awesome:  This is the sort of idea that works SO well, and can be applied to almost any type of knitting project. Take a fun stranded motif that is all over the original pattern, and use it just as an accent detail in an otherwise solid colour knit. This works brilliantly for two reasons- first, completely stranded sweaters can be a bit intimidating for some knitters or even too warm for some, so using the pattern as an accent rather than the main event can really help with both tackling colourwork as well as reducing a sweater’s thickness.

Secondly, this is an amazing way to use up stash yarn! If you have almost enough for a full sweater but not quite, how about adding contrasting details like these to the hem, cuffs, and neck? That would reduce the main colour yarn, and all for some fun detashing for contrasting colours. You’ll notice that in both the stripes and the smaller circles, there isn’t really a lot of contrasting yarn used 0 small amounts of each of the colours. This really helps add some fun to a knit, both in the process of knitting it and in wearing it!

Isn’t that so pretty? She’s actually got 7 (!!!) different colours here in the colourwork bands, and they all go together so well. I love how inspiring this is!

Julie, thanks so much for featuring this. You are so right – knitting is not about being intimidated or daunted, it is about being creative. This was such a fun knit.

Aw I remember when you used to do Modification Mondays (and picked mine once and I felt like a legit celebrity!!). I’m guessing you stopped because it became too much work to find good ones but if you every get in the mood to do them again, I loved reading them.

It got a lot harder to find them! So many people stopped really updating their projects on Ravelry, probably because they use Instagram or Tiktok to document their knits, so there was a real decline in things like project notes and explaining what they did differently. I would love to still do it, but it wasn’t sustainable once the decline of project documentation went down so dramatically. But I am always happy to do them again, if you see any good ones!

I also loved this. Always thought cuffs and other trim were good ways to use up yarn, but this looks really intentional, not just an afterthought. So glad you found it!
