A Weekend in the County with Knitting Friends

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw a whole bunch of photos on my Instagram stories of me, Tanis (of Tanis Fiber Arts) and Shireen (of The Blue Brick) having a little weekend away in Prince Edward County. I’m a massive fan of the county and have planning a weekend in the County down to an art. I know what area I like to stay in, my top criteria for an airbnb, when the best time is to go to certain places, which are my favourite wineries, and so on. We stayed in Wellington, at this airbnb, if you are interested. We all loved it!

And of course we took photos. Soooo many photos. Shireen has shared the project of this new shawl, which is a free pattern – the Sideways Emy! Click here for more info on it.

We brought tripods. And cameras. And it was great because we all knew exactly what we needed to play around with different photo ideas and get the shots. Like below! Getting those awesome sock photos.

And of course, shenanigans.

I think at the back of my mind I thought we would talk about maybe doing a retreat, something fun to share with others. But when we talked about what it would take to run something like this, and yet keep the intimate feel of our weekend away where we could be (as Shireen calls it) our ‘boring potato selves’: where we could be off the record, swear, and talk about deeply personal things and know that it was a judgment-free zone. I don’t know how you replicate something like that on a larger scale and make it any kind of a knitting event, really. Particularly for Tanis and Shireen who are far more ‘famous’ in the yarn world, and who would then have uncomfortable demands put on them (like ordering yarn and then asking for it to be hand delivered at an event, or asking a lot of extremely detailed questions about how they dye yarn or scale their businesses, etc. Not saying any of that would be truly terrible, but it would mean spending all their time being the face of their businesses, as opposed to relaxing.). So while it probably looks like we must be planning something, I assure you, we are not. There are no plans.

From left to right: Coriander Girl, Rosehall Run winery, East & Main Bistro.

It was just a girls weekend, with a side order of knitting. And photography, because if there was anything the three of us completely understood, it was how we love to get a good shot.

So, I leave you with this video that Tanis took of me singing Baby Shark with a very tiny clothespin. In a restaurant. As you do.

I loved this!!! It really made my morning to see friends having fun and in such a
beautiful place! I cannot knit as well as you sweet ladies. I can do simple projects
and I wish I would have taken the time when my sweet mother was living to do
more. She was amazing at knitting and crocheting. She often was able to
reproduce something without a pattern. Watching all of you warms my heart.
And, while I’m not ready to knit some of the projects you make, I still love
being a part of the emails. It’s encouraging to me to do more. xoxooxox

This was the best weekend I’ve had in a long time! Reflecting on it’s awesomeness one of the things that surprised me a little was how little we actually talked about knitting specifically. We’re all knitters and obviously have that majorly in common, but it was really a friends weekend first, knitting weekend second. It was so nice!

What fun! And, such a lovely place to get together with your friends. I know you mentioned that you didn’t knit much but I bet what was created was gorgeous. I love the idea of spending time with others who are also into taking pictures. The shot of you guys getting the perfect photo of the socks is so good!

Oh I love this, what a wonderful thing to do with two fellow knitters and friends! I think you are pretty famous too

I think it’s wonderful that all of you decided not to plan a retreat and just enjoy a weekend relaxing. I think with the type of business all of you run, you probably don’t get enough down time with friends- keep that special time for yourselves!

A week-end with friends, in a beautiful location – that sounds like an awful lot of fun! Thanks for sharing. When you work from home all the time, it is so refreshing to get away and connect with people you love.

I loved being myself, with people who totally get me! Most relaxing thing I’ve done in ages, and the BAY-BEE-SHARK song has of course now become the AR-EE-AH song!!! In was surprised-not-surprised at the intimacy we fell into instantly, like girls who do this every other weekend instead of for the first time ever… but not the last 🙂

What a great recap! Seems like you gals had so much fun. A well-deserved break, I am sure. This is my idea of a perfect weekend away!
