Modification Monday: Alpaca Wheat Sweater

Original Patterns: Wheat and Heritage

Knitter Extraordinaire: Alina (Ravelry ID, website)

Mods: Combined the two sweater patterns into a new knit- used the shaping, cables and longer back from Wheat, and the line details and i cord bind off from Heritage. Details can be found on her blog post, here.

What Makes This Awesome:  Combining two patterns is so much easier than you would think, and if you are looking to make your first modification, that is a great place to start. These two patterns are both for the same yarn weight, and it’s easier to add in details form one pattern or the other when you are working with the same gauge. The magic of this knit is all in the details- the raglan lines, the center slip stitch, the balance of the neckline with the cabled sleeves. This is an especially great trick when you find a pattern you love, but want to knit something different- why not take the details that you love best and put them into your next knit? This works for accessories as well as garments, too! One of these patterns (Heritage) is in my queue, so I’m excite dot se these mods- such great ideas!

I liked how she mimicked the pattern photos, it’s actually a great way to show the details of a sweater and its sleeves. Both patterns are very similar in shape (and from the same designer), so I guess combining the favorite elements were less tricky in terms of calculation than in the other types of mods you usually highlight. A great ‘mods for beginners’ example.

I love both Wheat and Heritage so much! Both patterns are *near the top* of my endless queue, so I do love the combination of both. And such a pretty yarn color – I don’t usually knit green for myself, but it looks so great with this pattern, I am re-thinking this.
