Modification Monday: Modified Rye

Original Pattern: Rye

Knitter Extraordinaire: Tyne (Ravelry ID)

Mods: Used twisted ribbing for the cuffs, and a twisted ribbing frame for each side of the garter stitch panels, adjusted the instep for a better fit. Great details can be found on her project page, here.

What Makes This Awesome: When you know how you like to knit your socks and then come across another pattern that you want to try, you have two choices- knit the socks just like they are written in the pattern, or make a few tweaks and modifications so that you know the socks will fit exactly the way that you like your socks to fit. Tyne went for the latter option, and customized her sock with the more defined twisted ribbing, and carrying that details down to better frame the garter stitch section. She also worked her instep in a way that works for her, making slight variations to the pattern to have a heel flap that works for her.

Sock knitters, take note- while it’s good to try new techniques, if you know you love a certain detail in your socks, why not modify a sock pattern to incorporate all your favourite elements? I do a similar  thing when I knit garments- I often add a faux seam for added stability, even though the patterns hardly ever call for it. And I’m always glad I do it, even though it seems like a small detail. Whatever you need to do to make your knits just right!

I don’t knit socks often because I struggle with the toe pockets (picture an axe blade-  that’s how my feet are shaped), but one day, I will find my perfect toe pocket- and then I will modify ALL sock patterns I knit for my perfect to pocket!

You know, the way to toe is worked on those socks looks like it might work for you. From the photos, it looks like the knitter decreased every row, instead of every other row. It also looks like they left more stitches to graft at the end, so the end of the sock is wider.

An anatomical toe is a great alternative option to the more common wedge toe.

The Rye socks are a classic by now. I love them. I plan to knit a Rye light soon. The twisted ribbing detail on this version is lovely.
