Modification Monday: Terre-Mer

Original Pattern: Terre Mer

Knitter Extraordinaire: Estelle (Ravelry Profile, blog)

Mods: While the pattern has options for a short (finished sweater is cropped) and long version of the stranded design, Estelle made modifications to have the short version of the stranded design and lengthened the body. She also added twisted stitch ribbing below the stranded section. Great details are on her project page here and her blog post on this sweater, here.

What Makes This Awesome: I love the details that make this sweater look so phenomenal- the ribbing after the stranded jacquard design are a real highlight for me. Take a close look at the details, the Estonian braid that divides the stranded section. Estelle also lengthened the body before the stranded design, which creates a really modern silhouette.

Estelle’s sweater is a great reminder to ask questions when we are looking at a pattern, particularly when there are really striking, defining features- it’s easy to think that it can only be one way. But what f the design was lower? Or higher? What would it look like with high contrast colours, or lower contrast? There are a lot of ways to play around with proportions in designs. Let your imagination roam, and think about what a design might look like if a couple of things were just a bit different! You could end up with a sweater as beautiful as Estelle’s.

This is great. I love both the original and Estelle’s version – and am always looking for patterns like this for my body type. This style is hard to find in ready-to-wear, so thank you, Julie. Without this post I may never have found it. Such an inspiration.
